Easy Windows Cleaning Tips

If you own a computer, it is very important that you take the time to properly maintain it. Routine maintenance will help preserve the life of your machine and protect you from the most system crashes, slow performance, and damaged or lost data. This article will five simple cleaning tips to keep your machine in good condition.

  1. Make sure your spyware and virus protection is up to date. New viruses are introduced every single day, and it is very important to make sure that your protection is up to date. Make sure that you check for updates often and scan your PC on a regular basis to detect and remove any errors.
  2. Repair disk errors. You want to make sure that you repair disk problems as soon as possible to prevent losing your data and corrupting your disk space. Windows gives you many options to check for disk errors and repair them. The ScanDisk and ChkDsk tools allow you to scan your PC for any problems and repair them. One of the most common reasons for disk errors is that information is stored on a bad section of space. If this is the case, ScanDisk or ChkDsk will automatically move the data another section and prevent that bad section from being used in the future. You want to scan for disk errors at least once a month.
  3. Defragment the hard disk often. Another common problem with hard disks is that they can become easily fragmented. Fragmentation usually occurs when your operating system does not have enough memory to store a file as one continuous unit. As a result, you computer will then divide the file into pieces and store it on various gaps of memory that exists between files. When you to locate, open or modify the file, the computer will then have to search the entire disk instead of one centralized area. This results in slower performance and limited memory. In order to keep your computer in the best possible condition, it is important that you defragment your computer at least once a week.
  4. Stay on top of your updates. Updating your programs and patches only take a few minutes, and your computer will be more efficient and secure because of it. Regular updated also help fix any problems that may exist in your operating system or application software. To check if your computer is due for an update, you should go to the Microsoft Updates website and follow their instructions.
  5. Back Up all of your important data. It is critical to back up a copy of critical files in case or fire, burglary or major system failure. You want to make sure that your files and programs are organized so that they are easy to back up and that you have a removable media device that you can use to back up your data.
