Guide to Defragmenting WindowsDefragmentation refers to the process of reducing the amount of fragmentation in your file system encounters. As your computer ages, fragmentation- the inability for the computer to process data sequentially- starts to develop. When you defragment the machine, you will compress the files on your computer, saving up disk space, restoring memory and improving computer performance. In order to successfully defragment your machine, you will need to reorganize the contents of your disk so that all files are stores closer together. You will then create more free space by compacting the computer so that it does not fragment itself again in the future. Another tip to defragmenting your computer is to keep smaller files in one single directory, since they are usually accessed in order. This method also helps save space on your disk. Fragmentation usually occurs when your operating system does not have enough memory to store a file as one continuous unit. As a result, you computer will then divide the file into pieces and store it on various gaps of memory that exists between files. When you to locate, open or modify the file, the computer will then have to search the entire disk instead of one centralized area. Since people are now using their computers more than ever, there is a greater need for computers to have more memory than ever before. The larger disk drives associated with that kind of memory capacity have resulted in more fragmentation issues. Defragmenting your computer on a regular basis can greatly help improve system performance. Since your computer does not have to spend time moving from one fragment to another, it takes considerably less time for the computer to read and write data. Defragmenting your computer will help it perform its tasks more efficiently. Your computer should be defragmented on a regular basis in order to prevent your disk access speed from eventually degrading over time. Defragmenting also helps preserve the life of the machine because it keeps head movement and wear and tear to a minimum, while simplifying the data access operations. When attempting to defragment your computer, you should try to do it right before going to bed, on the way out to work, or some other time that you will be busy and not need to work on the computer. Defragmenting is a very long process and if you have a lot of information stored on your hard disk, it can take several hours before the defragmentation is complete. You also want to make sure that you have Windows in safe mode. This will make the defragmenting process faster and protect the other programs that are running at the time. The next thing you will need to do is uninstall any programs that you no longer want or need. This will make the process a lot easier. The fewer amounts of files the computer has to compress, the faster the computer can compress any empty disk space. After you have deleted any unwanted files, you will then need to close any unnecessary programs and delete your temporary files. After you have taken these steps, you will be ready to begin to defragment your machine. To run the disk defragmenter program, go to the start menu, click run and enter dfrg.msc in the window. Once the defragment window appears, select the C drive and hit the defragment button. You will receive a pop up on the screen when the defragmenting process is complete. |
